Students are encouraged to participate in the arts groups of the Rīga Stradiņš University.

RSU mixed choir Rīga was established in 1951 and for almost 20 years (1967-1986) its conductor was the accomplished professor Jānis Dūmiņš. In 1968, the choir was awarded the status of a National Choir. Over the years, the choir has been led by many talented conductors, e.g. Centis Kriķis, Kārlis Beinerts, Edvīns and Inga Dziļums, Ints Teterovskis, etc. Today the conductors of the choir are Evita Taranda and Zane Zilberte; choir master is Roberts Hansons.

The repertoire of the choir varies, as performances include all sorts of music from the time of renaissance to modern music or music written by contemporary artists, e.g. Paul McCartney's oratorio "Ecce Cor Meum" or Czech composer Petr Eben's music "De Circuito Aeterno".

The choir has performed in many countries and it has received many awards and international recognition in international competitions. On average, the choir gives many concerts a year and performs in various Latvian towns, as well as the Ceremony of Matriculation and Graduation Ceremony, and other social gatherings. An important time of the year is Christmas, when the choir performs Christmas concerts in churches together with various orchestras and acclaimed soloists. Additionally the choir goes on international tours and organises summer camps to enhance mutual friendships.

The name of the RSU student folk dance group Ačkups comes from an old Latvian dance. The group was founded in 1951, and already in 1975 it was awarded the status of a National Dance Group.

From 1967 until 1995, the leader and soul of the dance group was Mr Juris Bērziņš. The present leader of the dance group is Ms Elita Treilone.

Members of the Ačkups dance group include promising physicians, dentists and other RSU students, as well as graduates and students from other universities. The rehearsals are extremely spirited and lively within this student dance group, since all of them enjoy rehearsing and performing traditional Latvian folk dances.

RSU sports club invites RSU students and teachers to demonstrate their skills and abilities not only in their academic endeavours, but in sports as well. There are various sport opportunities at RSU, e.g.:

  • basketball,
  • volleyball,
  • floorball,
  • frisbee,
  • soccer,
  • table tennis,
  • swimming,
  • aerobics,
  • tennis,
  • aesthetic gymnastics.

The sports club annually organises:

  • basketball championships,

  • quick-matches in basketball with academic staff and international students,
  • Sports Days (very popular!),
  • aerobic show,
  • table tennis competitions,
  • badminton matches between the academic staffs of RSU and Rīga Technical University.

The sports club also has a body-building hall, however to attend it you will have to become a member of the sports club. Workouts are provided both in the afternoons and in the evenings.

Should you wish to go swimming, you can do it in the sports centre "Ķīpsala", which offers student discounts.

RSU's aesthetic gymnastics group was established in the 90s. This sport includes elements of callisthenics and dance. Members of the group have participated in various competitions and performed in programmes in Latvia, as well as abroad: Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Portugal and other countries. In 2008, the group successfully participated in the 13th World Gymnaestrada in Austria.

The group encourages new participants (girls only) with preliminary knowledge and skills in callisthenics, dance or ballet, to apply.
